SOA는 죽었다.
버튼 그룹에서는 SOA의 죽음을 선포하였다. 얼마전까지 IT의 구세주로 생각되었던 SOA는 실패한 대형
실험으로 변해버렸다. (최소한 대부분의 조직에서는 그렇다) 처음 SOA의 예상은 비용을 절감하고
대형조직에 대한 민첩성을 향상시킬 것이라고 하였다. 하지만 매우 드문 경우를 제외하고는 SOA는
약속한 성과를 도출하지 못했다. 버튼 그룹에서는 많은 조직에서 SOA가 사태를 악화시키고(향상시키지
못하거나) 비용을 증대시키고, 개발기간이 길어지며, 시스템은 과거보더 더 취약해지는 현실을 들춰내었다.
2009년도에는 정보화예산이 더욱 축소될 것이다. (여타 분야와 마찬가지로) 조직에서는 SOA 부서의
예산을 절감할 것이다.
연구소장인 앤 토머스 메인의 블로그에 따르면, "이제 현실을 받아들일 때이다. SOA 피로는 SOA 실망으로
바뀌었다. 현업인력은 더이상 SOA가 스펙타클한 이익을 가져다 줄것이라고 믿지 않는다. SOA는 나쁜 단어가
됐으며, 우리의 사전에서 지워져야 한다."
비록 SOA는 죽었지만, 서비스 지향 아키텍처를 위한 요구사항은 어느때보다도 더 강해지고 있습니다.
서비스 지향은 데이터와 업무 프로세스의 통합을 위한 선결과제입니다.
이것은 매쉬업과 같은 상황개발모델을 가능하게 하고, SaaS와 클라우드 컴퓨팅의 기본 아키텍처가 됩니다.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- 01/05/09 -- Burton Group, a research and consulting firm focused on in-depth
analysis of enterprise technologies, announces the death of "SOA" (service-oriented architecture).
Once thought to be the savior of IT, SOA has instead turned into a great failed experiment -- at least
for most organizations. In the beginning, the forecast for SOA was to reduce costs and increase agility
on a large scale, but except in rare situations, SOA has not delivered those promised benefits. Burton
Group research and surveys have uncovered that for many organizations, their SOA efforts have made
things worse, not better: costs are higher, projects take longer, and systems are more fragile than
ever. Now with budgets tightening in 2009, organizations are cutting the funding for their SOA
initiatives.
According to a blog post by Anne Thomas Manes, VP and research director, "It's time to accept reality.
SOA fatigue has turned into SOA disillusionment. Business people no longer believe that SOA will deliver
spectacular benefits. 'SOA' has become a bad word. It must be removed from our vocabulary."
Although the word "SOA" is dead, the requirement for service-oriented architecture is stronger than
ever. Service-orientation is a prerequisite for rapid integration of data and business processes; it
enables situational development models, such as mashups; and it's the foundational architecture for SaaS
and cloud computing. (Imagine shifting aspects of your application portfolio to the cloud without
enabling integration between on-premise and off-premise applications.)
Commenting on her blog post, Manes said, "The term 'SOA' has lost its luster. Rather than talking about
'SOA,' we now need to talk about 'services.' Stop debating about insignificant technology issues.
Instead focus on building the right services that support business requirements."
